After the disappointment of last week’s 1-0 opening day defeat against Coventry, Southend had the opportunity to put their first three points of the season on the board at home to Blackpool. The visitors had cruised past Bristol Rovers last week with a 2-0 victory at Bloomfield Road and would therefore offer a tough test.

New Season, Same Old Problems

As Southend United kicked off the 2018/19 season in League One, not even the most negative of Blues supporters expected the campaign that unfolded before them. Serious injuries to key players in October/November time saw the Shrimpers tumble down the table and resulted in club legend Chris Powell getting the sack after just 14 months in charge.

Champions of the World? You’re Having a Laugh!

‘Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win.’

These were the words of Walker’s crisp founder and Match of the Day host, Gary Lineker, after West Germany knocked England out of the World Cup in 1990 (apparently he played football as well, who knew?) This was also the case in 2014 as Germany swept aside all that came before them to lift the World Cup, four years later, they finish bottom of their group.
